The work is in the middle.
Too easy is a waste. Too hard is a wall. The computer's job is the gap.
People love to talk about grit.
Grit is what you need when the work is the wrong size.
If the work is the right size, you do not need a speech. You need the next problem.
Too easy is a trap. You feel busy. You finish the set. You learned nothing.
You will not admit that. The checkmark felt good.
Too hard is a different trap. You stare. You search for a hint. You close the tab.
You tell yourself you will come back when you have more time. You will not.
The useful hour is in the middle. Just past what you can already do. Close enough to reach. Far enough that you have to.
This is not a secret. Every coach knows it. Every good teacher knows it. The problem is the room. One lesson, thirty people, one level. The middle is an accident.
A computer does not have a room of thirty. It has you.
That is the whole trick. Right-size the next step. Then do it again tomorrow, when the middle has moved.
Call it the sweet spot of difficulty if you want a name. The name does not matter. The measurement does.
What can this person already do. What is the smallest next thing. What will slip if we wait a week.
Language makes this obvious. A page with three new words is a gift. A page with thirty is noise. Same story. Different count.
Math is the same. A proof you can start is a gift. A proof in a language you do not speak yet is theater.
Statistics too. Writing too. Logical thinking too.
A drill for a pilot on a line check is the same idea with higher stakes.
We started with language because the signal is clean. Known word, unknown word. The pattern is not about Korean. Korean is just the first material.
If your tool cannot move the difficulty, it is a library. Libraries are fine. They are not a teacher.
The promise of this kind of software is not more content. It is less waste. Fewer hours on the two edges. More hours in the gap where a person actually changes.
That is Inlet. Not a slogan. A constraint. If a feature does not help us sit in the middle, it has to wait.
